Tim Curry is a blue cheese, bold and veined, impossible to ignore once he is on the plate, especially when playing the villain. He brings a theatrical flair to every role, even in animation. Start with The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Frank-N-Furter is all swagger and an unsettling grin, a character who delights in his own power, and Curry plays every scene at full volume. Legend shows his ability to transform entirely, buried under prosthetics, yet still dominating the screen as Darkness. In It, he gives Pennywise the Dancing Clown a chilling charm that has lingered for decades. He is just as effective in lighter fare. Watch him in Clue as Wadsworth, keeping a houseful of suspects and secrets perfectly in hand. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York gave him the put-upon Concierge, a man whose simmering frustration is always close to boiling over. Even as Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island, the menace has a joyful, full-bodied flavour. He commits to every role, no matter how outlandish, and his work always leaves a distinct tang.

The “I love you” scene [Culkin’s character plays a clip from an old black and white gangster film…] “Get down on your knees and tell me you love me” [Curry’s character outside the hotel room beckons to the other hotel staff to get down on their knees as he does, unbeknownst to him that there’s not a gangster with a gun in the room…] “I love you!” … “Merry Christmas ya filthy animal” Tim Curry is such a delight and comedic mastermind in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
