Samuel L. Jackson is a proper aged cheddar: sharp, authoritative, and with a flavour that cuts through any scene it is in. He makes himself known from the moment he is on screen, even if he is just serving coffee. Start with Pulp Fiction. Jules delivers a sermon on divine intervention, and Jackson makes the big words land with a quiet menace that shifts the whole film. Jackie Brown is a different kind of tang. Ordell is all casual charm and lethal intent, and Jackson lets you feel the slow burn of a man losing control. He carries a huge amount of narrative weight as Mace Windu in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, a general in a purple lightsaber, all gravitas and command. Even a brief appearance in Iron Man 2 as Nick Fury is enough to leave a mark. Watch him in The Hateful Eight, a man holding his cards close to his chest in a blizzard, and Jackson gives every line a satisfying bite. Like the best aged cheddar, he is never bland, and always leaves a strong impression.
