Ryan Gosling is a slow-aged Gouda, smooth and warm on the surface, with a quiet strength that builds with every viewing. He often holds more than he shows, letting a scene sit rather than rushing it. Start with Half Nelson. Dan is a teacher coming apart at the seams, and Gosling plays the unraveling with a weary calm that never feels performative. Drive asks for the opposite, a man of almost no words, and the performance lives in the stillness, in the small shifts of his eyes. In Lars and the Real Girl he manages to make a relationship with a doll feel utterly sincere, a performance that is both tender and a little heartbreaking. La La Land showed he could carry a musical with a sly smile, every note precise. Then Barbie let him unleash a magnificent, unhinged energy, playing a man grappling with his place in the world with total commitment. He takes roles that ask him to hold back, to mature the performance in a way that feels unforced. Like the finest Gouda, the subtle complexities are always there.
