Halle Berry is a blue cheese with a clean, direct bite: she can make a performance feel exposed without making it feel simple. Her stillness often does as much work as the action around it. Monster's Ball is the place to start. Berry plays a grieving widow with a guardedness that keeps emotion from becoming display; the pain arrives in small shifts of voice and posture. In Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, she gives the performer a precise poise, letting the polish carry its own pressure. Then X-Men changes the register. As Storm, Berry holds her ground with an economical physicality, making authority look like a choice rather than a flourish. The sharper edge surfaces in The Call, where urgency lives in her clipped timing and focused attention. Berry can move between intimate grief and action without sanding away the detail. Like a good blue, her work has a firm bite, and its feeling lingers after the scene has passed.
