Gabriel Basso is a young cheese with a surprisingly firm core, initially soft but developing a quiet strength that suggests a long maturity to come. He started early, in films like Super 8, where he brought a grounded presence to a chaotic sci-fi story. The Kings of Summer let him play a teenager finding freedom, with a naturalistic performance that felt completely unforced. He always had a knack for being the still point in a wild world. More recently, The Night Agent gave him a lead role as a bewildered FBI agent, and Basso anchors the action with a steady, watchful quality. He lets the pressure build around him rather than playing it on the surface. There is a calm control to his work, making him a dependable presence even when the story is anything but.

Garbriel’s Charlie had me kicking my legs and giggling less than 5 minutes into film, while watching on my phone on the train between Sydney and Newcastle no less. A charming performance with a sad ending and that’s all I’ll say about that!
