Take her early work in Somewhere. She played a girl navigating her father's fame with a quiet self-possession that never felt precocious. Super 8 gave her a bigger canvas, and she brought an old-soul sensibility to the youthful adventure. Maleficent showed she could command a fantastical world, and then she would step into something completely different. Watch The Neon Demon, where she plays a model moving through a predatory world, her wide-eyed innocence slowly curdling into something far sharper. The Great lets her lean into the absurd, playing Catherine with a grin and a surprisingly ruthless streak. She is never afraid to look uncomfortable. Fanning is a fresh cheese that rewards repeat visits, always revealing new depths.

This would not have been an easy role, to make Margot likeable, to make you understand her choices, but Elle Fanning did such an incredible and engaging job. Also, she is super comfortable in her own skin, even with all the breastfeeding, as the audience you never felt awkward, it was just such a normal portrayal of new motherhood. Her range is incredible, when you compare this against her role in A Complete Unknown you see just the breadth of what she is capable of.
