Cillian Murphy is a cave-aged Comté of an actor: complex, controlled, and rewards the audience who watches closely. He often plays the man thinking several moves ahead, and the thought process is the exciting part. Start with Oppenheimer. He carries the weight of the film on his brow, the slow burn of genius and guilt playing out in expressions that are almost imperceptible. In Peaky Blinders, Tommy Shelby is a man constantly under pressure, and Murphy lets the internal life show only in flashes: a twitch, a stare, a stillness that suggests violence just under the rind. Red Eye shows the chilling side of that control, all politeness and hidden threat. Even in 28 Days Later, as the world crumbles, he brings a quiet intensity to a man just trying to put one foot in front of the other. The Wind That Shakes the Barley asks for deep moral seriousness. Murphy builds a performance that rewards patience, much like a well-aged cheese.
